Event - March 4th Business Awards Breakfast

Ready to kick off another year recognising and rewarding some of the amazing industrial businesses operating in Melbourne’s southeast region?

To help launch the 24th year of the Melbourne Business Awards, we’re delighted to announce Matt Finnis, CEO of St Kilda Football Club, as our guest speaker for the first breakfast of the year on Friday, March 4th.

As the Saints return to their spiritual home in Moorabbin, Matt will be speaking about the cultural change the club has undergone in recent times and its focus on re-igniting a sense of ‘belonging’ and ‘community’ – two values that the Melbourne Business Awards hold dearly.

It’s fair to say sport runs thick through Matt’s blood. As well as the day-to-day running of the St Kilda Football Club, Matt has previously been CEO of the AFL Players’ Association, Chairman of Ladder – an AFL Players charitable initiative to tackle youth homelessness, and beyond footy is also a director of Surfing Australia.

Matt was born and raised within the city of Kingston and still lives locally with his wife and three children. We look forward to welcoming Matt to the stage and hearing the Saints story.

With Christmas fast approaching, it is time to reflect on 2014 as we seek to recognise and reward outstanding and diverse businesses across our dynamic patch of southeast Melbourne.

From bayside to Braeside, we’re celebrating manufacturers that have forged new ground and own their niches; from food companies with humble suburban beginnings to businesses that have built success overseas as much as at home.

Join us for our annual awards Gala breakfast on December 5th and help us applaud Australian and Victorian enterprise at its very best. As well as awarding the Business of the Year title, we’ll be rewarding those companies and individuals that showcase their leadership potential when it comes to empowering young employees.

And guest speaker Andrew Fuller, a psychologist and scientific adviser to the ABC TV series Whatever: the science of teens, will also provide some fresh perspective on how to “Deal with Tricky People” in a workforce context.

To avoid disappointment, book your seat today!

Event - July Networking Breakfast

Guest Speaker: Alex Commins, Managing Director of Colorpak

SURVIVING CHALLENGES TO THE MANUFACTURING SECTOR

Lessons for all businesses and bucking the bad news story trend

When manufacturing minnow Colorpak (www.colorpak.com.au) swallowed an industry giant in 2010, it was billed as an industry game-changer and, not unexpectedly, came with numerous challenges.

The mid-tier industrial packaging player’s acquisition of Carter Holt Harvey’s folding carton operations was a bold move at a time when manufacturing was feeling more than the pinch.

Job losses and site closures followed as Colorpak restructured to improve its competitive position, further fuelling the negative headlines about the death of Australian manufacturing.

Yet, shareholder returns of 120%; 9-12% growth year on year; a doubling of operational capacity underline a success story that combines the mantras, ‘survival of the fittest’ and ‘who dares wins’.

Join us at our July breakfast to hear Alex Commins, Managing Director of Colorpak (2004 winner of the Business of the Year), as he expands on the challenge of surviving seismic shocks to the manufacturing sector and the lessons for all types of businesses.

Networking from 6.30am, formal proceedings begin @ 7am.
